Indoors

If you are indoors when there is a lightning storm here are some things you should do to reduce your risk of being struck by lightning.

  • Do not have contact with water.  Do not bathe, shower, wash dishes, etc.  Lightning can travel through the building’s plumbing.
  • Do not go next to windows, doors or on porches or on concrete.
  • Do not use your electric equipment such as computers, laptops, washers, dryers, anything that is connected to an electric outlet.

Outdoors

  • Avoid being an open vehicle such as motorcycles, scooters, convertibles.
  • Avoid open structures such as parks, playgrounds, ponds, lakes, swimming pools, beaches, porches, gazebos, etc.
  • Do not lie down or sit under a tree.
